Shaker Summer Skate Sessions

We are excited to announce that the club will be offering ice sessions including practice ice and clinics all summer long to both members and guests. Please read the FAQ below for details.

1. What is the Shaker Summer Skate?
The program is a combination of club practice ice, and on and off ice clinics that the Shaker Figure Skating Club will offer beginning Monday, June 6 through Friday, August 20th, every weekday between 745AM and noon (with a 15 minute break / ice cut). If participating in full, each participant will have daily 2.75 hours of practice ice, a 30 minute on-ice clinic led by a pro (coach), and a 45 minute off ice clinic also led by a pro (coach) or certified instructor. Individual ice sessions will be available as well.

2. What are the clinics?
More to come on this, but each week day, we will have club member and affiliate coaches lead clinics in their area of expertise or passion. For instance, for off-ice, clinics can be pilates, conditioning, ballet, etc. For on-ice, clinics can be moves focused, jumps focused, interpretive, etc. We will be ASAP providing a schedule of what clinics will occur on which weekday.

3. How is this different from the traditional summer program offered by the City of Shaker Heights?
The City of Shaker Heights will not be offering the summer skate camp program that it has offered in the past. With support and coordination from the City, the Shaker FSC is coordinating a summer program to ensure our members have the ability to skate this summer. We are very excited about the program and hope our members are as well.

4. Will the participants be supervised?
In short, NO. It is important to note that THIS IS NOT A CAMP- these are summer ice sessions and clinics- the only difference from what the club offers during the school year being the schedule and the frequency of the clinics. Parents are welcome to stay and spectate at any time and should if they wouldn’t feel comfortable dropping off their skater at regular ice sessions during the school year. Like our regular sessions, we will have ice monitors, but ice monitors are not responsible for supervising the participants, helping with skates, etc. Skakers who are not comfortable or capable of behaving properly in an unsupervised environment should not participate in this program unless a parent can stay with them.

5. Who is eligible to participate?
All home and associate club members, and guest skaters who are members of other clubs, or have done Learn to Skate and have passed Basic 5 at minimum.

6. How will the participants be grouped?
For clinics, the participants will be grouped into two groups- Summer Upper- those skaters who have passed Pre-Juv moves, and Summer Lower for those who haven’t (yet). Most of the practice ice is combined– however, to participate in the practice ice between 745am and 945am, the skater must have passed pre-pre moves or have been observed and deemed allowed to participate on Open level ice.

7. What is the daily schedule?
For all:
7:45AM-9:45AM – Practice Ice (must have passed pre-pre moves)

For Summer-Lower:
945AM-10AM Ice cut / break
10AM-1030AM On-ice clinic
1030AM-1115AM Off-ice clinic
1115AM-Noon Practice ice (all levels)

For Summer-Upper
945AM-1030AM Off-ice clinic
1030-1045AM- Break
1045-1115AM On-Ice clinic
1115-Noon Practice ice (all levels)

8. Can adult skaters participate?
Yes- if they are young at heart!

9. Can I receive lessons from my coach during this time?
Yes you can, and it is encouraged. The only exception is that during the clinics, we will not allow lessons outside of the clinic. As per usual, it is up to the individual skater to coordinate and schedule their individual lessons with their coaches.

10. If I want to participate in every session this summer? Do I need to click ‘Book Ice’ 270 times?
You can sign up for individual sessions or you can sign up for all sessions on a particular day or for an entire week (we call these groups of sessions packages). There are a few package options based on start time (for those that see 745am as a wee bit too early for summer vacation but still want the benefit of a package). Also- in case you are wondering, an individual skater can really do 270 different sessions this summer.

11. Where do I go in Ice+ to sign up?
To sign up for packages, click the “Shaker Summer Skate Packages” link on the left. Individual sessions are done as they are for our spring sessions. If signing up multiple skaters, the booking of a package or individual sessions will need to be done for each skater (click the link at the top to change the skater to book for).

12. Do I need to contract whole packages, or can I sign up for individual sessions?
You can do either. The packages are offered for convenience and include a discount. However, each session can also be signed up for individually.

13. What if I sign up and can’t do a session? Are there make up credits?
Yes. We will continue to offer make up credits- to both members and guests, regardless of if you purchased your session through a package or as individual sessions. Each session will need to be cancelled individually before its start time (contact the ice administrator if it is within 24 hours).

14. What is the cost?
For members for single sessions, or ice continues to be priced at $17 per hour for practice ice, $17 per hour for an instructor led off-ice clinic, and $17 for 30 minutes for a pro (coach) led on-ice clinic. For guests, it is $20 for the same.

15. Are there discounts for signing up for entire days or weeks?
Yes! The day packages are priced at $16 per hour for members, $19 for guests. The week packages are priced at $15 per hour for members, $18 for guests.

16. I have another family member who is not a member of the club but would like to participate- how is this done?
You can add a guest (such as a sibling) to your account in Ice+. Once you login, select ‘Add Guest Skater’ on the left. Note that the guest skater will not receive the discounted member pricing, and that you will be financially responsible for the ice charges for this guest. If you have friends, acquaintances, or family members for whom you do not want to be financially responsible, then the steps in the next answer should be followed instead.

17. I am (seriously) asking for a friend, who is not a member is a skater who would like to participate- how is this done?
Guest skaters need to register with the club on Ice+ (www.shakerfigureskatingclub.org). There is a link on the left entitled ‘Guest Registration’. Once registered, they can sign up for summer packages or individual sessions per the timeline below. Note that all skaters must have passed Basic 5 to be able to skate on club ice. Finally, guest skaters that belong to another club should consider joining with an Associate membership. The membership is very reasonably priced and with it one gets discounted ice and can use our ice all year long.

18. When will you know the instructors for each clinic?
We are working to set the schedule over the coming weeks and we will let everyone know ASAP.

19. When can I sign up?
Home club members can sign up for packages starting on 3/27. Associate members can sign up for packages on 4/4 and guests on 4/10. Individual sessions will be made available on 5/1 for home and associate club members and 5/15 for guests. Space is very limited (our capacity is 17 per session) so we suggest that you sign up as early as possible.

20. When do I pay?
You will be charged 30% upon sign up and the balance on May 1. Anything booked after May 1 will be paid in full. Note that the sign up for an individual session or a package is not cancelable nor refundable, but you can exchange individual sessions for make up credits. Members (and guests in a member’s family) will have the charges posted to their ice bill. Guests will need to pay within 1 hour of signing up.

21. Are there any dates when this isn’t being offered?
There will be no ice on Monday July 5th as it is a public holiday.

22. What about ice in the early mornings and weekends like you have this spring?
During the summer, we will not have ice time outside of 745am-noon on weekdays. We will resume our regular ice schedule for the Fall 2021 contract period on August 23, 2021.

23. What are the health and safety protocols for participants, coaches, instructors and spectators?
We are planning on continuing the health and safety protocols that are in place currently. As part of this, masks will be required for all individuals entering Thornton Park for a Shaker FSC sponsored or related activity until they exit the building. This policy will be revisited as circumstances evolve.

24. I have another question that is not one of the 23 questions that you have listed here.
Please contact the Ice Administrator (sfsciceadmin@gmail.com) with any additional questions.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone on the ice this summer!
