Good News – More Ice! And Clinics!

Good news- we now have ice through October 4! You will likely notice that the schedule for these weeks are very similar (but not identical) to this week (I am sure you will agree that in the pandemic, every week and every day is starting to seem the same).

Thursday evening ice is one such change- for those Skaters that are looking to get home to watch NFL Thursday Night Football, or those that just want more flexibility than a 90 minute commitment, you can now sign up for individual 30 minute slots on Thursday night. Skate for only 30 minutes, skate for 90 minutes, or any hour in between.

Other weekday evening times have moved slightly, so please double check the schedule before you click.

Even better news- starting next week, we are starting our clinics, Bronze Clinic and Silver Clinic.

Bronze Clinic

Instructors: Ryan Zeltner and Frank Singley

Time: Fridays 4:30 – 5:00 pm (9/18, 9/25, 10/2**times may be subject to change due to pandemic scheduling- we hope to keep the time as close to the original time as possible and we will advise of times past 10/2 once they are available from the city**)

Prerequisite: None This program is designed for the skater who has not yet taken his/her Pre-Juvenile Moves test.

Description: The Bronze Clinic is taught by long time Bronze clinic instructors Ryan Zeltner Keegan and Frank Singley. It is a great way to learn new skills, while simultaneously safely making friends with other club members. The Bronze Clinic focuses on learning stroking technique, developing power, and improving edge quality. It is recommended that skaters repeat the clinic until they pass the Pre-Juvenile Moves test. This clinic is a great way for your skater to get comfortable on a session with other skaters. In addition to learning techniques, skaters learn how to become aware of other skaters on the ice, how to work together in a group, and general ice etiquette. The clinic is followed each week by a one hour junior club session. Skaters are encouraged to skate this session to practice what they have just learned in the clinic. Social distancing between skaters and coaches will be maintained and enforced and masks are required to be worn on the ice by both coaches and skaters.

Silver Clinic

Instructors: Emily Smayda Kelly and Erin Schopf

Time: Wednesdays 6:45 – 7:15 pm (9/16, 9/23, 9/30 **times may be subject to change due to pandemic scheduling- we hope to keep the time as close to the original time as possible and we will advise of times past 9/30 once they are available from the city**)

Prerequisite: Pre-Juvenile Moves test OR enrolled in 6th grade or over and Preliminary Moves.

Description: The Silver Clinic is taught by Emily Smayda Kelly and Erin Schopf –long time skating coaches, both with ties to the Shaker FSC, but new to teaching the Silver Clinic. It is a great way for more advanced skaters to continue to learn new skills while simultaneously, safely interacting with other skaters in the club. This on-ice clinic will focus on the components elements of the IJS judging system which includes five areas: Skating Skills, Transitions, Performance, Composition, and Interpretation. Skating Skills: Defined by overall cleanness and sureness, edge control and flow over the ice surface demonstrated by a command of edges, steps, turns, etc., the clarity of technique and the use of effortless power to accelerate and vary speed. Transitions: The varied and purposeful use of intricate footwork, positions, movements and holds that link all elements. Performance: Involvement of the skater/pair/couple physically, emotionally and intellectually as they deliver the intent of the music and composition. Composition: An intentionally developed and/or original arrangement of all types of movements according to the principles of musical phrase, space, pattern and structure. Interpretation of the Music/Timing: The personal, creative and genuine translation of the rhythm, character and content of the music to movement on ice. Social distancing between skaters and coaches will be maintained and enforced and masks are required to be worn on the ice by both coaches and skaters.
