FAQ’s – Shaker Spring Ice Spectacular
What is the Shaker Spring Ice Spectacular?
The Shaker Spring Ice Spectacular is an ice show hosted with the City of Shaker Heights Recreation Department. The show is composed of group, solo and specialty numbers. Members of our Learn to Skate program, LTSUSA members of neighboring rinks, as well as associate and full members of the Shaker Figure Skating Club are welcome to participate. The Shaker Spring Ice Spectacular is a long standing tradition in the Shaker Heights community.
How many performances are there?
There are 3 performances the weekend of the show: Friday Evening, Saturday Matinee, and Saturday Evening.
What is required of participants?
Participants must attend rehearsals on weekends beginning in March to learn group choreography, a technical rehearsal (typically the Sunday before the week of the show), a dress rehearsal (the Thursday afternoon before the show), and three performances (Friday evening, Saturday matinee, and Saturday evening). A formal schedule will be published in January.
My skater is very young, will the show be too much of a commitment?
Our youngest participants, age 3-5, typically skate in one Baby Blades/Snowplow Sam number. We know how important routines and proper sleep are for younger children and plan rehearsals with this in mind. They are always placed in the first half of the show and are not required (but always welcome to stay for the finale, so that they can leave as soon as their number ends.
Should my skater sign up for one or two numbers?
This depends upon the skater. Here are some questions to ask when determining the best option: How comfortable is my skater on the ice? Do they get tired of skating after 20 minutes? The entire show length is approximately 2 hours with a 15 minute Intermission for the ice resurfacing. Will they last that time to participate in the finale? There is a fee difference for participating in two numbers versus one, does our budget allow that?
Based on the City’s experience with past ice shows and participants, if the skater is currently Basic 1, 2 or 3 then one number is recommended.
When are rehearsals?
A formal schedule will be published in January. All practices begin in March and will be held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Based on school spring break schedules and the Easter holiday, we are attempting to restructure times so that minimal absences will occur. Tentatively, plan on one hour rehearsal weekly (per number) starting in March.
What if we can’t make it to every rehearsal?
We understand that there are unavoidable conflicts. Please communicate these conflicts to the coordinator as soon as you are aware of them and email erin.schopf@shakeronline.com with the date of absence.
Could there be additional rehearsals?
Based on attendance and the completion of the show numbers, additional on or off ice practices may be added. The Ice Show Coordinator will work with the skaters and families to find a mutually agreeable time for any additional rehearsals.
MANDATORY Rehearsal- Costume/Finale/Picture Day- SUNDAY APRIL 28th, 2024
We hold one mandatory rehearsal the Sunday before the week of the Ice Show. This is great way for our skaters to practice in their costumes, get their pictures taken and learn the finale.
Do I get to keep the costume? How do I choose a size?
Yes. The costume(s) is yours to keep. This year we have sizing leotards for the skaters to try on before choosing a preferred size during registration. Sizing sessions will be arranged around LTS times and/or SFSC ice times. The Ice Show Coordinator will communicate to all participants these options.
When do I get my costume?
The Ice Show Coordinator will email details about costume pick up (usually in mid-April). Typically, skaters are asked to arrive early or stay after a rehearsal to try on their costume. You are responsible for your own alterations. If a skater is not available on the specified date, please email the coordinator to arrange alternate pick up options as soon as possible
How do I Register and what is the Participation Fee?
Registration will be available online at the links posted above. All participants must be members of US Figure Skating or Learn to Skate USA. Participants without a current membership will be able to pay the annual cost of a Learn to Skate USA membership during registration renewal.
What happens next?
Upon registering, you will then receive a confirmation email for your records. After registration has closed, you will receive a welcome email from the Ice Show Coordinator. The welcome email will include pertinent information as well as a link to a Google Drive folder where all ice show information will be stored and available to reference.
